How to ask your manager for something

Asking your boss for a pay rise or promotion can be daunting. Here are 3 steps to help the conversation go smoothly.

As much as we hope that our efforts at work will always be noticed and rewarded, sometimes that doesn’t happen. 

Many of us will have times where we want to ask for recognition of our achievements, whether that be a pay rise or a promotion.

Here are some smart ways to approach what can be a delicate conversation.

Step 1: Planning

Think about when is the best time to approach your manager. What do you know about their schedule and when are they likely to be most receptive? If they’re having a difficult week or are under pressure it might be better to wait.

Once you have booked in some time and let them know what you want to discuss, think about the case you would like to make. Have your facts or supporting points front of mind. Practice what you want to say in advance. 

Step 2: In the conversation

Recognise your manager’s preferred communication style and allow this to shape your delivery. They may want specific examples of what you’ve achieved or it might be ok to discuss how you’ve been feeling. Their style will also affect how they respond. If it’s short and direct, remember that’s them - it’s not personal. 

Accept their response in the meeting - even if it’s not what you want to hear- and give yourself time to process that outcome before figuring out your next move.

Step 3: After the meeting

If it goes well - great! Remember it’s not always appropriate to discuss salaries or pay rises with other colleagues so wait till you get home to celebrate.

If it’s not the outcome you wanted then it’s ok to feel disappointed. Debrief about it with someone you trust.

Ultimately it’s better to know where you stand so you can decide how you want to move forward.
