8 ways to politely say no

How to say no more often to protect your time and energy.

When you create healthy boundaries, you'll start saying no more often. It's a good thing because it means you're putting your values and wellbeing first!

Nervous about saying no? That’s normal. Here are some phrases to help you say no with confidence and kindness.

1. “I’m not sure. Let me get back to you.”

This phrase buys you some time. It’s ideal if you often say yes reflexively or without thinking things through.

2. “Sorry, I can’t do this right now.”

Simple, succinct, and leaves little room for argument – while still being polite.

3. “I can’t do this, but I can do this.”

Offering an alternative is a great way to help while honoring your boundaries at the same time.

4. “No, I’m not comfortable with this.”

This is an excellent phrase to use when protecting your physical and emotional boundaries. It's important to be firm.

5. “I need more information before I can make a decision.”

Ask for more details before you commit. This also gives you more time to check your schedule.

6. “Thanks for thinking of me, but I can’t make it.”

There's no need to explain – simply saying thank you and declining is all you must do.

7. "I'm honored you asked me, but I can't."

Sometimes it’s a privilege to be asked to do something, but it’s still not right for you.

8. “I can’t make it this time, but please keep inviting me!”

This a great phrase to use when you still want to be included but have competing priorities.
