Working over summer?
Here’s a survival guide to see you through.
Summer can be stressful when you're working. It might even be the busiest time of the year for your industry. While others are taking a break, you're probably navigating a hectic work schedule, vacations, family gatherings, and the change in routine the season brings. It's a lot!
If this sounds like you, we see you. Here are some tips to help you take care of your wellbeing during this time of year.
Expect the unexpected
Summer shakes up everyone's routine, even if you're working right through. So prepare for your calendar to look slightly different for a few months.
It's also worth preparing for customers to act a little strange. Those working in customer-facing roles over the summer will know the air feels different. Some people are giddy with excitement. Others are a bit hot and bothered. Many people are so relaxed they forget some of us still have to work!
As JK often says, one thing that helps his anxiety is managing his expectations and making a plan. If you're prepared for work to feel more chaotic and challenging, you might cope better when things get weird. Because they probably will.
Have a plan for demanding customers
Many people are stressed and anxious since their kids are out of school for the summer. While there's no excuse for rude behavior, it does exist – so it's important to have a plan for how to respond.
Talk to your manager about how to handle demanding customers and situations. Explain what you need to feel safe at work. Know your organization's approach to customer service and what you can do if you encounter a problem.
Plan some summer fun
JK often talks about "filling up his goody bag" with activities to look forward to after work. For example, he might look forward to going for a walk with his wife, playing guitar, or reading a book.
Add fun summer activities to your own goody bag. Whether it's a swim at dusk or an ice cream at lunch, look for windows to weave some summer fun into your life.
Know your limits
If summer is a busy time of the year for you, it's easy to fall into the trap of trying to do it all or working excessive hours – especially if you're covering for people on vacation. Remember, you're one person, and a human at that – you're not a machine! Get clear on your limits and communicate these to those around you.
You might also want to set boundaries in your personal life, such as saying no to social events that might exhaust you. Remember, we're better with boundaries.
Take it one day at a time
When work is busy, it can help to focus on one day at a time. Notice when your brain starts thinking about the future (perhaps worrying about the rest of your busy week) or ruminating on the past (perhaps wishing you'd done something differently). Try some mindfulness techniques to bring yourself back to the present moment.
Taking it one day at a time is also great for planning fun, restful activities. In the absence of an extended vacation, focus on small things you can do daily to fill your cup. Prioritize having fun every single day.
Plan a future vacation
Indulge in some dreaming about your next vacation and when you'll get your turn. It might even help to put a picture of your ideal location where you'll see it daily. The idea is to remind yourself this busy summer won't last forever – it's just a season, and your time will come.
