Everyone’s a winner after Groov’s first hackathon

Highlights from our very first hackathon at the Groov HQ.

When Team Hackstreet Boyz and Team Animation Memory Leak faced off in Groov’s inaugural hackathon, competition was fun but fierce. Which team would emerge victorious? Coffees were hot, presentations were on point, and creativity was flowing fast.

Two days, two teams, two ideas – ready, steady, hack!

A hackathon, also known as a codefest, is a competition-style event where engineers get together for an intensive session to bring new projects to life.

“Each team picks a small technical project to work on – something that isn’t currently implemented within the company – with the hopes of showing how that project could be beneficial to the company in the long-term if pursued further,” explains Groov Software Developer Jayson Daji.

At the end of day two, each team presents their project to the wider group and prizes are given out by the management team. And, although the light-hearted competition kept things fun, everyone was a winner in the end.

“There wasn’t really direct competition as we were working on drastically different things – but some of us take everything as competition!” laughs Groov Mobile Developer Jacob Foley.

Both teams won prizes across different categories, such as best team name, team that had the most fun, and most impactful idea. Everyone walked away feeling energised, excited about their projects, and more connected to Groov’s mission and vision.

“Part of the reason for having a hackathon is to promote autonomy, mastery, and purpose,” explains Groov Software Engineer Shane Morton.

“We achieve autonomy through creating and selecting our own ideas to work on and self-selecting into teams. We further mastery through experimenting with and learning new technologies and techniques. And we advance purpose by using the environment and space the Hackathon provides to put our skills to use in expanding our knowledge as a team and organisation.”

The real winners are poised to be Groov customers – look out for some new and innovative ideas getting into the Groov product offering soon!
