“We’ve got to start listening, listening to people on their level, understand them and understand what they’re going through as best as we can.” – Sam Webb
Sam Webb of Neighbours, Home & Away and Australian Survivor fame is an incredible person. He is a successful actor with an evident and inspiring passion for his craft.
He’s also a co-founder of LIVIN, the mental health organisation founded in 2013 in loving memory of his dear friend Dwayne Lally, who took his own life after living in silence with a mental illness.
In Episode 17 of Open Minded, Sam chats to JK about his acting career, including what it takes to become the characters that he plays and how his vulnerability from lived experience allows him to be a better actor.
On going back to New York to further study his acting career Sam says: “I like to think I’m like a student of my life. I just want to keep learning, and I don’t think you can ever learn enough”.
JK and Sam discuss the powerful story behind LIVIN and the work his organisation is doing to “break the stigma of mental health and improve peoples mental health through early intervention and prevention initiatives”. Including, how an outdated model of masculinity makes it difficult for men to support each other and steps men can take toward being more vulnerable among their peers.
An incredibly emotional and inspiring listen that will open your eyes to the experience of the young men in our lives.

“It’s ok if you don’t have the answers. Someone that’s struggling a lot of the time, aren’t looking for an answer. They don’t want you to fix them, they just want you to listen and understand.”
– Sam Webb
