Did you catch our webinar ‘Reflections from Workplace Wellness Festival 2022’? We invited three workplace wellbeing experts to share some of their top learnings from the festival (where Groov was title sponsor) with our Groov Insider community.

We were joined by:

  • Allisa O’Connell, Head of People & Culture at Flight Centre Travel Group Australia

  • Allan Ball MBSW, Director at White Ribbon Australia

  • Jenny Steadman, Acting Country Director at Potential Project Australia

Watch the replay for all the goodness or read on for some of their top tips around one of the festival’s most-discussed topics, employee retention!

Allisa O’Connell: Focus on culture, rituals, and purpose

A strong focus on culture, rituals, and purpose is working for Flight Centre, says Head of People & Culture Allisa O’Connell. When these three things work together, people feel a strong sense of belonging.

“Where people belong, they stay. Retention happens by being really considered around the rituals that help people feel belonging to this organisation and culture. What are the rituals that you can bring back that allow people to feel that sense of belonging again? And also being really clear about purpose so people feel great when they show up.”

Allan Ball: Treat people like people

To have true workplace wellbeing, people need to feel safe at work. And this starts with treating people like people, says Director at White Ribbon Australia Allan Ball.

“The way we lose people is if we have this expectation for people to be like robots, or if we don’t tap into their needs as an individual. How do we keep people engaged, and motivated, and energised? One of the things we need to do is set the organisation up for success for individuals.”

Jenny Steadman: Support leaders

Research from Potential Project Australia reveals many people feel unsupported by their managers, says Acting Country Director Jenny Steadman.

“Our research shows 61% of people don’t feel supported by their managers and 53% feel their manager isn’t attuned to their wellbeing. I think it’s that ability for managers to be wise and compassionate that’s going to help significantly with both attraction and retention.”
