Coping with conversations in the workplace where a person is in crisis

What to do when a workplace conversation turns into a therapy session.

When someone in the workplace shares their personal struggles or life challenges with you, it can be a lot to take on. Particularly if you have no idea it’s coming.

You may not feel at all prepared for the emotional load that’s being placed on you - or remotely qualified to handle it. And the truth is, you’re probably not. It’s important to realise therefore that you don’t have to solve anyone’s problems or shoulder the burden of finding solutions.

What you can do, if you feel able to, is listen. It doesn’t have to be right away. You can let the person know that you do want to talk to them and set up a time to do this.

It will give you a chance to mentally prepare. It can also help to time-box the conversation so that there is a point at which you can step away.

The CARE model can be extremely effective in this scenario.

CARE stands for:

Check in: Ask them if they are ok.

Actively listen: Don’t feel the need to have all the answers.

Reassure: Let them know you’re here for them and you want to listen

Encourage them to get the help they need.

This could include showing them how to download and use the Mentemia app so they utilise the tools and resources designed to support their wellbeing.

Recommend and direct them to EAP services or prompt them to go to their GP.

After being part of a conversation like this you may feel overwhelmed or emotionally drained yourself.

This is perfectly normal. Hard situations and big feelings are part of life and all emotions valid - theirs and yours.

What’s really helpful is having your own self-care strategies in place. Use Mentemia’s 6 pillars of wellbeing to help you create small daily habits that will have a positive impact on how you feel.

Finally, when you get home why not try to BOB? That’s Breathe, Observe and Boogie. Deep belly breathing will help you feel more calm, then take a moment to observe what’s around you - really tune in to the present the sights, sounds and smells.

Next, put on some music and shake it all about. These simple physical actions can transform your mood and help to centre you after a difficult day.
