Fun and flavourful ways to stay hydrated this summer

What counts towards your daily water intake? You might be surprised.

When it comes to staying hydrated, straight water is usually best.

But, there are plenty of other ways to boost your water intake and add a little flavour and fun to your day.

Here are some other beverages and foods that can help you stay hydrated over the warm summer months.

Watermelon (and other watery foods)

Yes, you really can ‘eat your water’. Watermelon is one of the most hydrating foods you can eat, closely followed by fresh fruits and veggies such as kiwifruit, cucumbers, and apples. Yum!

Coffee and black tea

While it’s true that coffee and tea are diuretics (they increase the production of urine), it’s a myth that they are dehydrating. When enjoyed in moderation, both coffee and tea will contribute to your overall daily water count.

Herbal teas

From peppermint to berry to chai, there are hundreds of herbal tea flavours to choose from. Unlike black tea, most herbal teas are caffeine-free, so you can drink high volumes without worrying about the caffeine content.

Milk (and mylks)

If you’re looking to quench your thirst and add some extra protein and fat to your diet, milk and mylks (plant-based milks) are a great option – just try to keep to 1-2 glasses per day at most.

Coconut water

From coconut milk to coconut oil, the humble coconut is very popular at the moment. Turns out, coconut water is pretty hydrating, too. It makes a tasty addition to homemade smoothies.

Soups and broths

The water used to make soups and broths also contributes to your daily water intake. Bonus if the soup includes plenty of veggies! For delicious summer soup recipes, click here.
